变调 biàndiào

Tones & Pinyin HSK1

The tone written on a syllable is not always the tone spoken, because neighbouring tones change each other. The two rules a beginner meets first are two third tones in a row, and 不 and 一 before a fourth tone.

Tones & Pinyin — The four tones, neutral tone, tone sandhi and the pinyin spellings.

Lesson

The two rules

Two third tones in a row: the first becomes a second tone (ni3 hao3 is spoken ni2 hao3). 不 bu4 becomes bu2 before a fourth tone (bu2 shi4). 一 yi1 becomes yi2 before a fourth tone (yi2 ge4) and yi4 before first, second or third tones.

लगातार दो तीसरे सुर: पहला दूसरा सुर बन जाता है (ni3 hao3 बोला जाता है ni2 hao3)। 不 bu4 चौथे सुर से पहले bu2 बन जाता है (bu2 shi4)। 一 yi1 चौथे सुर से पहले yi2 बनता है (yi2 ge4) और प्रथम, द्वितीय या तृतीय सुर से पहले yi4।

Everyday phrases that change

ni3 hao3 -> ni2 hao3 (hello). hen3 hao3 -> hen2 hao3 (very good). bu4 shi4 -> bu2 shi4 (is not). yi1 ge4 -> yi2 ge4 (one of them). The dictionary form keeps the original tone.

ni3 hao3 -> ni2 hao3 (नमस्ते)। hen3 hao3 -> hen2 hao3 (बहुत अच्छा)। bu4 shi4 -> bu2 shi4 (नहीं है)। yi1 ge4 -> yi2 ge4 (इनमें से एक)। शब्दकोश में मूल सुर ही रहता है।

When 不 stays bu4

不 only changes before a fourth tone. Before first, second and third tones it stays bu4: bu4 chi1 (do not eat), bu4 lai2 (does not come), bu4 hao3 (not good).

不 केवल चौथे सुर से पहले बदलता है। प्रथम, द्वितीय और तृतीय सुर से पहले वह bu4 ही रहता है: bu4 chi1 (मत खाइए), bu4 lai2 (नहीं आता), bu4 hao3 (अच्छा नहीं)।

Reading 不 and 一 flatly

Learners read bu4 and yi1 the same way in every phrase. This is the most noticeable beginner habit, because the changed tone, not the written tone, is what a native speaker hears.

शिक्षार्थी हर वाक्यांश में bu4 और yi1 को एक ही तरह पढ़ते हैं। यह आरम्भिक शिक्षार्थी की सबसे स्पष्ट आदत है, क्योंकि मूल वक्ता लिखे सुर को नहीं, बदले हुए सुर को सुनता है।

Learn phrases, not rules

Memorise ni3 hao3, bu2 shi4 and yi2 ge4 as whole spoken chunks. The rule then explains what your mouth already does.

ni3 hao3, bu2 shi4 और yi2 ge4 को पूरे बोले जाने वाले अंशों की तरह याद कीजिए। तब नियम उसी की व्याख्या करेगा जो आपका मुँह पहले से कर रहा है।

Written versus spoken in HSK

HSK pinyin is printed in the dictionary tone (bu4 shi4, yi1 ge4), but the audio uses the changed tone. Trust your ear, not the printed form, in the listening paper.

HSK में पिनयिन शब्दकोश-सुर में छपा होता है (bu4 shi4, yi1 ge4), पर ध्वनि बदले हुए सुर में होती है। श्रवण भाग में छपे रूप पर नहीं, अपने कान पर भरोसा कीजिए।
