In northern Mandarin many words take a small 儿 er at the end. It is not a separate syllable; it bends the final vowel of the syllable before it and often marks a smaller or more affectionate thing.

How 儿 sounds

The 儿 is not said as a full "er". Say the previous syllable and curl the tongue as you finish: na3r sounds like "narr", yidianr like "yee-dyar". It never carries a tone of its own.

儿 को पूरा "er" नहीं बोला जाता। पहला शब्दांश बोलिए और अंत करते समय जीभ मोड़िए: na3r "नार" जैसा, yidianr "यी-द्यार" जैसा। इसका अपना कोई सुर नहीं होता।

Words that take 儿

哪儿 narr (where), 这儿 zher (here), 那儿 nar (there), 一点儿 yidianr (a little), 玩儿 wanr (to play). The base word keeps its tone; the 儿 only colours the ending.

哪儿 narr (कहाँ), 这儿 zher (यहाँ), 那儿 nar (वहाँ), 一点儿 yidianr (थोड़ा), 玩儿 wanr (खेलना)। मूल शब्द का सुर वही रहता है; 儿 केवल अंत को रंग देता है।

Saying 儿 as a whole syllable

Learners say na3-er with two full syllables. That sounds like a different word. The 儿 must ride on the syllable before it, not stand alone.

शिक्षार्थी na3-er को दो पूरे शब्दांशों में बोलते हैं। वह अलग शब्द जैसा लगता है। 儿 को पहले शब्दांश के साथ मिलकर आना चाहिए, अलग खड़ा नहीं।

Learn it word by word

儿化 is not a rule you apply freely; it is a habit attached to certain words. Learn 一点儿, 玩儿 and 哪儿 as fixed pieces and add others as you meet them.

儿化 in the HSK

HSK pinyin often writes erhua plainly (yidianr). In the listening paper recognise the curled ending; a missing 儿 can change 哪儿 into a different word.
