Sentence Patterns HSK1

A plain statement with an adjective needs 很 in front of it: 我很好. 太 before the adjective plus 了 after it means "too much". 都 (all) and 也 (also) go before the verb.

What each adverb does

很 before an adjective is neutral: 我很好 (I am fine). 太 + adjective + 了 means excessive: 太贵了 (too expensive). 都 means all or both, and 也 means also. All four stand before the word they change.

विशेषण से पहले 很 तटस्थ है: 我很好 (मैं ठीक हूँ)। 太 + विशेषण + 了 अत्यधिकता दिखाता है: 太贵了 (बहुत महँगा)। 都 तथा 也। चारों अपने बदले जाने वाले शब्द से पहले आते हैं।

In real sentences

今天很热。 Today is very hot. 这个太贵了。 This is too expensive. 我们都是学生。 We are all students. 我也喜欢茶。 I like tea too.

今天很热। आज बहुत गर्म है। 这个太贵了। यह बहुत महँगा है। 我们都是学生। हम सब विद्यार्थी हैं。我也喜欢茶। मुझे भी चाय पसंद है।

Dropping 很

English "I am fine" has no "very", but Mandarin 我很好 needs 很; 我好 alone sounds unfinished. 很 here is not the English "very", it is a placeholder that makes the adjective a predicate.

अंग्रेज़ी "I am fine" में "very" नहीं होता, पर मंदारिन 我很好 में 很 आवश्यक है; अकेला 我好 अधूरा लगता है। यहाँ 很 अंग्रेज़ी "very" नहीं, बल्कि विशेषण को विधेय बनाने वाला स्थानपूरक है।

Learn the frames

Memorise three frames: 很 + adjective, 太 + adjective + 了, 都 + verb. Filling frames is faster than translating from English.

तीन रचनाएँ याद कीजिए: 很 + विशेषण, 太 + विशेषण + 了, 都 + क्रिया। रचनाएँ भरना अंग्रेज़ी से अनुवाद करने से तेज़ है।

很 and 太 in the HSK

HSK 1 tests 太...了 and the required 很 in a plain adjective sentence. Leaving 很 out is a marked error, not a style choice.

HSK 1 में 太...了 तथा साधारण विशेषण वाक्य में आवश्यक 很 की परीक्षा होती है। 很 छोड़ना अंक-कटौती वाली ग़लती है, स्वैच्छिक विकल्प नहीं।
