Mainland China writes simplified characters (简体字); Taiwan, Hong Kong and many overseas communities write traditional characters (繁体字). The HSK tests the simplified set, but recognising common traditional forms helps with signs and older texts.

Two writing systems, similar sounds

The sound is the same whichever set is used. The simplification usually cuts the number of strokes: 门/門 door, 学/學 study, 国/國 country, 车/車 car, 书/書 book.

ध्वनि दोनों प्रणालियों में समान रहती है। सरलीकरण सामान्यतः रेखाएँ कम कर देता है: 门/門 दरवाज़ा, 学/學 पढ़ना, 国/國 देश, 车/車 गाड़ी, 书/書 पुस्तक।

Same word, two forms

中国 and 中國 are both Zhongguo. 学生 and 學生 are both xuesheng. A learner reads only the simplified column for HSK, but will meet the traditional column on menus and in Hong Kong or Taiwan.

Mixing the two sets

Writing 學 next to 学 in the same sentence looks careless. Choose the simplified set for HSK and use it consistently.

Learn the top pairs

Learn the door, study, country and car pairs first; they cover most signs. Seeing 門 in a shop window and knowing it is 门 door is worth a few minutes of study.
