Tones & Pinyin HSK6
Sentence stress shows which information the speaker treats as new or contrastive. It adds length, height and clarity to a word without changing its tone. Moving the stress in one sentence changes the answer it gives.
Tones & Pinyin — The four tones, neutral tone, tone sandhi and the pinyin spellings.
Sentence stress marks the information the speaker treats as new or contrastive. It is not a change of tone; the syllable keeps its tone but becomes longer, higher and clearer. Neutral word order puts the focus near the end, so 我明天去北京 answers where. If the question asks when, stress moves to 明天: 我明天去北京。
with stress on 我, 明天, 去 or 北京. Stress on 我 answers who; on 明天 answers when; on 北京 answers where; on 去 answers what action. In 他不是学生,他是老师。 the stress on 老师 makes the contrast clear. In 我连饭都没吃。 the word 连 pushes the focus onto 饭.
我明天去北京। में बल 我, 明天, 去 या 北京 पर रखकर तुलना कीजिए। 我 पर बल कौन बताता है; 明天 पर कब; 北京 पर कहाँ; 去 पर कौन-सी क्रिया। 他不是学生,他是老师। में 老师 पर बल विरोध साफ़ करता है। 我连饭都没吃। में 连 बल को 饭 पर ले जाता है।
Stress repairs a misunderstanding. If someone thinks you went to Shanghai, you say 我去了北京,不是上海。 If someone thinks another person paid, you say 是他付的钱。 In a shop, 我要这个,不是那个。 makes the choice unambiguous. News readers and public speakers use stress to guide the listener to the key fact.
बल ग़लतफ़हमी सुधारता है। यदि किसी को लगता है कि आप शांघाई गए, तो कहिए 我去了北京,不是上海। यदि किसी को लगता है कि किसी और ने भुगतान किया, तो कहिए 是他付的钱। दुकान में 我要这个,不是那个। चुनाव स्पष्ट कर देता है। समाचार पढ़ने वाले और वक्ता बल से श्रोता को मुख्य तथ्य तक ले जाते हैं।
Some learners stress every content word, which makes the sentence sound angry and leaves no clear focus. Others stress function words such as 的, 了 or 吗, which cannot carry the main contrast. A third error is to change the tone of the stressed syllable; stress should add length and pitch, not replace the original tone.
Before you speak, ask what question the sentence answers. The answer word is the focus. Underline it, then say the sentence with that word longer and slightly higher. Record yourself and check that only one or two words stand out, not five.
बोलने से पहले पूछिए कि वाक्य किस प्रश्न का उत्तर देता है। उत्तर वाला शब्द ही केंद्र है। उसे रेखांकित कीजिए, फिर उस शब्द को लंबा और थोड़ा ऊँचा बोलिए। अपनी आवाज़ रिकॉर्ड कीजिए और देखिए कि केवल एक-दो शब्द उभरते हैं, पाँच नहीं।
HSK 6 listening often tests contrastive stress: the same sentence is said twice with different stress, and the answer depends on which word is emphasized. In reading, a question may ask what the author emphasizes, which follows the same logic as spoken focus.
उच्च स्तर की सुनने वाली परीक्षा में विरोधात्मक बल अकसर पूछा जाता है: एक ही वाक्य दो बार अलग बल के साथ कहा जाता है और उत्तर इस पर निर्भर करता है कि कौन-सा शब्द उभारा गया। पढ़ने में भी प्रश्न पूछ सकता है कि लेखक किस पर बल देता है, जो बोलने वाले केंद्र जैसा ही तर्क है।
