A number cannot stand directly before a noun; a measure word goes between them. 个 is the general one, but people, books, animals, machines, cups and flat things each prefer their own.

Number plus measure plus noun

The order is 数 + 量 + 名: 一个人 one person, 两本书 two books, 三只猫 three cats, 一杯茶 one cup of tea, 一件衣服 one piece of clothing, 一张桌子 one table, 一辆车 one car.

Which measure word for what

个 for people and general items, 本 for books, 只 for animals and one of a pair, 杯 for cups, 件 for clothing and matters, 张 for flat things, 辆 for vehicles, 位 for people politely.

Using 个 for everything

Learners survive on 个 and then write 两个书 for two books. A native speaker expects 两本书. 个 is a fallback, not a universal answer.

Store the measure word with the noun

Never learn a noun alone. Learn 书 with 本, 猫 with 只 and 桌子 with 张 from day one, and the measure word never has to be guessed.

संज्ञा को अकेला कभी न सीखिए। पहले दिन से 书 के साथ 本, 猫 के साथ 只 और 桌子 के साथ 张 सीखिए, तब माप-शब्द का अनुमान नहीं लगाना पड़ेगा।
