A number cannot sit directly before a noun. It needs a measure word between them: 一个人 yí ge rén (one person), literally "one [general] person". 个 is the most common measure word.

Number + measure word + noun

The order is always number, then measure word, then noun: 三个学生 sān ge xuésheng (three students), 两个哥哥 liǎng ge gēge (two older brothers). Never say 三学生. Every counted noun needs its measure word.

When to use 个 and when not to

Use 个 for people and for nouns with no special measure word: 一个人 yí ge rén, 一个问题 yí ge wèntí (one question), 这个 zhège (this one). For books use 本 běn (一本书 yì běn shū), for animals 只 zhī, for flat things 张 zhāng, for cups 杯 bēi.

Leaving the measure word out

An English speaker says 一老师 for "one teacher". Mandarin needs 一个老师 yí ge lǎoshī. The measure word is not optional and is not an accent detail — its absence is a grammar error the HSK marks.

अंग्रेज़ी बोलने वाला "एक शिक्षक" के लिए 一老师 कहता है। मंदारिन में 一个老师 yí ge lǎoshī चाहिए। माप शब्द वैकल्पिक नहीं है और उच्चारण की बारीकी नहीं — उसका छूटना व्याकरण की गलती है जिसे HSK गिनता है।

Learn the noun with its measure word

Never learn 书 shū alone; learn 一本书 yì běn shū. The measure word is part of the word. When you cannot remember one, 个 is the safe general choice, and a native speaker will understand it.

书 shū को अकेले कभी न सीखिए; 一本书 yì běn shū सीखिए। माप शब्द शब्द का हिस्सा है। याद न आए तो 个 सुरक्षित सामान्य विकल्प है, और मूल वक्ता उसे समझ लेगा।
