Every noun has a measure word

Count with number + measure word + noun: 一条河, 两座山, 三场比赛. The measure word matches the shape or purpose of the noun, not the speaker.

个 as the safe default

When you do not know the measure word, 个 is understood everywhere. It is never wrong for people and is acceptable for many objects, but an exam prefers the exact one.

Using 个 for everything

一个山 and 一个河 sound childish. A mountain is a 座 and a river is a 条. Learn the noun and its measure word together as one unit.

一个山 और 一个河 बचकाने लगते हैं। पर्वत 座 होता है और नदी 条। संज्ञा और उसका माप-शब्द एक इकाई की तरह सीखें।

Draw the shape

Sketch 条 as a long line, 座 as a seated block, 场 as a flat field. The picture anchors the measure word to the noun far better than a translation.
