Reading & Listening HSK6
An argumentative essay presents a claim and supports it with evidence and reasoning. A strong reader separates the claim from the examples, follows the signposts, and tests whether the evidence really supports the conclusion.
Reading & Listening — The two receptive skills the HSK tests, with short graded texts.
An argumentative essay has three parts: the claim 论点, the evidence 论据, and the reasoning 论证 that connects them. The claim is the sentence the author wants you to accept. Evidence may be data, examples, expert opinion or personal experience. Reasoning explains why the evidence supports the claim. Read for the claim first, then test each piece of evidence against it.
The first sentence gives both a benefit and a harm; the word 因此 marks the conclusion. 然而…… the part after 然而 usually carries the author view. In 一方面……另一方面…… the author may be balancing, not agreeing with both sides.
News commentary, product reviews and opinion columns use the same structure. A review may say The claim is about suitability, not about the camera alone. Recognising the structure helps you judge whether the evidence is strong enough for the claim.
The most common error is to choose an example as the claim. Another is to accept a claim because it sounds moral or emotional. Learners also ignore concessions: a sentence with 虽然 or 当然 may admit a weakness before the main claim. Finally, do not confuse the author view with the view the author quotes in order to refute it.
Draw two columns: claim and evidence. Put every sentence in one column, then ask whether the evidence really supports the claim. Circle signposts such as 因此, 然而, 总之, 由此可见. If the passage has no explicit claim, build one from the conclusion.
HSK 6 reading asks for the main idea, the purpose of a paragraph, and the strength of an argument. The correct option usually paraphrases the claim and the reasoning. An option that repeats one example is usually a trap.
