乃至于 links items in an escalating series and marks the last one as the extreme. It is close to 甚至 but sounds more formal, so it belongs to written argument and speech.
Sentence Patterns — Word order, 是/有, questions, negation and the 把/被/了/过/着 patterns.
Item + item + 乃至于 + extreme item. 他会说英语、法语，乃至于阿拉伯语。 The series grows in surprise or difficulty, and 乃至于 points at the item that goes furthest.
वस्तु + वस्तु + 乃至于 + चरम वस्तु। 他会说英语、法语，乃至于阿拉伯语। सूची आश्चर्य या कठिनाई में बढ़ती है और 乃至于 उस वस्तु की ओर संकेत करता है जो सबसे आगे जाती है।
他熟悉北京，乃至于整个北方。 这个问题影响了公司，乃至于整个行业。 他记得每个人的名字，乃至于他们的生日。 The last item is the strongest or least expected.
他熟悉北京，乃至于整个北方। वह बीजिंग से लेकर पूरे उत्तर तक जानता है। 这个问题影响了公司，乃至于整个行业। यह समस्या कंपनी से लेकर पूरे उद्योग तक पहुँची। 他记得每个人的名字，乃至于他们的生日। उसे हर व्यक्ति का नाम, यहाँ तक कि जन्मदिन भी याद है। अंतिम वस्तु सबसे प्रबल या सबसे कम अपेक्षित होती है।
A speaker builds a list and closes with 乃至于 to make the last point land: 我们要帮助自己，帮助邻居，乃至于帮助陌生人。 Because it sounds formal, it appears more in speeches and essays than in chat.

Learners reach for 乃至于 whenever they mean and, but the items must escalate: 我买了面包乃至于牛奶 is wrong, because milk is not an extreme. Use 和 for a plain list and save 乃至于 for a climax.

Rank items from ordinary to surprising before you write. Put the most striking item last and join it with 乃至于. If no item stands out, the pattern is not needed.

A 乃至于 series often ends at the detail an inference question asks about, because the extreme item carries the emphasis of the writer. Read the last item in the list carefully.
