Neutral tone is short and weak, and its pitch follows the syllable before it. Erhua adds 儿 to a syllable and fuses it into one retroflex syllable. At HSK 6 these small sound changes often decide the meaning of a word.

Neutral tone is not a fifth tone. It is short and weak, and its pitch follows the syllable before it. Pinyin writes it with no tone mark: 妈妈 māma, 桌子 zhuōzi. Erhua adds 儿 to a syllable and fuses it into one retroflex syllable, written with r: 花儿 huār. The 儿 is not pronounced as a separate er.
हल्का सुर पाँचवाँ सुर नहीं है। वह छोटा और कमज़ोर होता है, और उसका उतार-चढ़ाव पिछले शब्दांश से तय होता है। पिनयिन में उस पर कोई सुर-चिह्न नहीं लगता: 妈妈 māma, 桌子 zhuōzi। एरहुआ में “儿” जोड़कर उसे पिछले शब्दांश में मिला दिया जाता है और r से लिखा जाता है: 花儿 huār। “儿” अलग “एर” की तरह नहीं बोला जाता।
东西 dōngxi means thing, but 东西 dōngxī means east and west. 地道 dìdao means genuine, while 地道 dìdào means tunnel. 画 huà is a picture and 画儿 huàr is a drawing with a colloquial tone. 一点 yìdiǎn means a little, and 一点儿 yìdiǎnr sounds more spoken. Read each pair aloud and listen for the short, weak syllable.
东西 dōngxi का अर्थ वस्तु है, पर 东西 dōngxī का अर्थ पूर्व और पश्चिम है। 地道 dìdao का अर्थ सच्चा है, जबकि 地道 dìdào का अर्थ भूमिगत मार्ग है। 画 huà चित्र है और 画儿 huàr बोलचाल के स्वर वाला चित्र है। 一点 yìdiǎn का अर्थ थोड़ा है, और 一点儿 yìdiǎnr अधिक बोलचाल जैसा लगता है। हर जोड़े को ज़ोर से पढ़िए और छोटे, कमज़ोर शब्दांश को सुनिए।
In a shop, 包子 bāozi is a steamed bun, while the erhua form is not standard in most northern speech. In a train announcement, 东西方向 means the east-west direction, not things. HSK 6 listening uses these pairs to check whether you hear a full tone or a weak one. A single weak syllable can decide the answer.
दुकान में 包子 bāozi भाप में पका हुआ भरवाँ बन है, जबकि अधिकतर उत्तरी बोली में उसका एरहुआ रूप मानक नहीं है। रेल की घोषणा में 东西方向 का अर्थ पूर्व-पश्चिम दिशा है, वस्तुएँ नहीं। सुनने वाली परीक्षा इन जोड़ों से जाँचती है कि आप पूरा सुर सुनते हैं या हल्का। एक हल्का शब्दांश उत्तर तय कर सकता है।
Learners often give the neutral tone a full first tone, so 妈妈 sounds like mā mā. Others pronounce 儿 as a separate syllable, so 花儿 becomes huā er. A third mistake is writing a tone mark on a neutral syllable, as in zhuōzǐ for 桌子. These errors change the rhythm and sometimes the meaning.
शिक्षार्थी अकसर हल्के सुर को पूरा पहला सुर दे देते हैं, इसलिए 妈妈 mā ma जैसा सुनाई देता है। कुछ लोग “儿” को अलग शब्दांश बोलते हैं, इसलिए 花儿 huā er बन जाता है। तीसरी ग़लती हल्के शब्दांश पर सुर-चिह्न लगाना है, जैसे 桌子 के लिए zhuōzǐ। इनसे लय और कभी-कभी अर्थ बदल जाता है।
Learn pairs, not single words: 东西 dōngxi and 东西 dōngxī, 地道 dìdao and 地道 dìdào. Clap a weak beat after the strong syllable, then say the word on that weak beat. When you hear 儿, do not add a separate syllable; curl the tongue at the end of the same syllable.
अकेले शब्द नहीं, जोड़े याद कीजिए: 东西 dōngxi और 东西 dōngxī, 地道 dìdao और 地道 dìdào। मज़बूत शब्दांश के बाद कमज़ोर ताली बजाइए, फिर उसी कमज़ोर ताल पर शब्द बोलिए। जब “儿” सुनाई दे, तो अलग शब्दांश न जोड़िए; उसी शब्दांश के अंत में जीभ मोड़िए।
In HSK 6 listening, a question may turn on one weak syllable. In reading, pinyin questions may ask you to choose the correct spelling of a neutral-tone word or an erhua word. Mark neutral syllables in your notes and practise the pairs until the difference is automatic.
