The neutral tone is short, weak and has no tone mark. The same syllable with a full tone can be a different word: 东西 dōngxi means thing, while 东西 dōngxī means east and west. Listen for length and strength, not only pitch.
हल्का स्वर छोटा, धीमा और बिना सुर-चिह्न वाला होता है। वही अक्षर समूह पूर्ण सुर के साथ दूसरा शब्द बन जाता है: 东西 dōngxi का अर्थ वस्तु है, जबकि 东西 dōngxī का अर्थ पूर्व और पश्चिम है। लम्बाई और बल सुनिए, केवल ऊँचाई नहीं।

In a shop you say 这个东西多少钱？ How much is this thing? The 西 is light. In a geography class 东西 means east and west and both syllables are full. Context and tone together decide the word.
दुकान में आप कहते हैं 这个东西多少钱？ यह वस्तु कितने की है? इसमें 西 हल्का रहता है। भूगोल की कक्षा में 东西 का अर्थ पूर्व और पश्चिम होता है और दोनों अक्षर पूर्ण सुर में रहते हैं। संदर्भ और सुर मिलकर शब्द तय करते हैं।
Reading every syllable with a full tone changes the word. 东西 said as dōngxī sounds like east and west, not thing. 地道 said as dìdào sounds like tunnel, not authentic. Do not guess from the characters alone; the tone pattern carries the meaning.
हर अक्षर को पूर्ण सुर में पढ़ने से शब्द बदल जाता है। 东西 को dōngxī पढ़ने पर अर्थ पूर्व और पश्चिम सुनाई देता है, वस्तु नहीं। 地道 को dìdào पढ़ने पर अर्थ सुरंग सुनाई देता है, प्रामाणिक नहीं। केवल अक्षरों से अनुमान न लगाइए; सुर-प्रतिरूप अर्थ बताता है।
Learn words in pairs, not alone. When a dictionary shows a dot or no mark, practise the short weak syllable. Clap the full syllables and leave the neutral one light and quick.
शब्द अकेले नहीं, युग्मों में सीखिए। जब शब्दकोश में बिंदु या कोई चिह्न न हो, तो छोटे धीमे अक्षर का अभ्यास कीजिए। पूर्ण अक्षरों पर ताल दीजिए और हल्के अक्षर को हल्का तथा तेज़ रखिए।
