A syllable with no tone mark is spoken light and short. It is not "no tone" — it is a real tone whose pitch copies the syllable before it.

Short, light, and never accented

The neutral tone is written with no mark. The second syllable of 谢谢 xièxie is neutral: xiè carries tone 4, the second xie is light. Many everyday words end this way — 妈妈 māma (mother), 爸爸 bàba (father), 朋友 péngyou (friend).

हल्का स्वर बिना चिह्न लिखा जाता है। 谢谢 xièxie का दूसरा अक्षर हल्का है: xiè पर चौथा स्वर है, दूसरा xie हल्का। रोज़ के बहुत से शब्द इसी तरह खत्म होते हैं — 妈妈 māma (माँ), 爸爸 bàba (पिता), 朋友 péngyou (मित्र)।

Neutral inside real words

你好 nǐ hǎo keeps both tones, but 我们 wǒmen (we) makes men neutral. 什么 shénme (what) makes me neutral. 桌子 zhuōzi (table) makes zi neutral. The character keeps its dictionary tone; the spoken word drops it.

你好 nǐ hǎo में दोनों स्वर रहते हैं, पर 我们 wǒmen (हम) में men हल्का हो जाता है। 什么 shénme (क्या) में me हल्का हो जाता है। 桌子 zhuōzi (मेज़) में zi हल्का हो जाता है। अक्षर का शब्दकोश-स्वर वही रहता है; बोला गया शब्द उसे छोड़ देता है।

Giving the neutral tone full strength

A learner says 谢谢 as xiè xiè, two strong fourth tones, and it sounds abrupt and foreign. The second syllable must be short and weak. When in doubt, make the neutral syllable lighter, not louder.

शिक्षार्थी 谢谢 को xiè xiè कहता है, दो ज़ोरदार चौथे स्वर, और वह कठोर और विदेशी लगता है। दूसरा अक्षर छोटा और कमज़ोर होना चाहिए। संदेह हो तो हल्के अक्षर को और हल्का कीजिए, तेज़ नहीं।

Neutral often marks grammar

A neutral syllable is often a grammar word: 的 de (possessive), 了 le (completed action), 吗 ma (question), 们 men (plural). Learning them as light syllables is learning the grammar at the same time.

हल्का अक्षर अक्सर व्याकरण का शब्द होता है: 的 de (संबंध), 了 le (पूर्ण क्रिया), 吗 ma (प्रश्न), 们 men (बहुवचन)। इन्हें हल्के अक्षरों के रूप में सीखना साथ-साथ व्याकरण सीखना है।
