Words & Measure Words HSK5

Modal adverbs show the speaker attitude: certainty, possibility, surprise, relief or concession. They sit before the verb or adjective and often decide the tone of the whole sentence, which is why HSK5 listening and reading questions ask about them.

Words & Measure Words — Everyday vocabulary and the measure word (量词) every noun takes.

Lesson

Attitude before the verb

情态副词 show the speaker attitude toward a statement: certainty (一定, 肯定), possibility (大概, 也许, 恐怕), surprise (居然, 竟然), expectation confirmed (果然), relief (幸亏), concession (反正), reason (毕竟), and inquiry (究竟, 到底). They usually stand before the verb or adjective.

情态副词 कथन के प्रति वक्ता का रवैया बताते हैं: निश्चितता (一定, 肯定), संभावना (大概, 也许, 恐怕), आश्चर्य (居然, 竟然), अपेक्षा की पुष्टि (果然), राहत (幸亏), विरोधाभास (反正), कारण (毕竟) और पूछताछ (究竟, 到底)। ये प्रायः क्रिया या विशेषण से पहले आते हैं।

One adverb, one attitude

Reading the tone

居然 and 竟然 make a sentence sound surprised or critical, while 果然 confirms an earlier expectation. 幸亏 looks back at a narrow escape, and 反正 closes a discussion by saying the result will not change. Choose according to the attitude you want, not just the meaning.

居然 और 竟然 वाक्य को आश्चर्य या आलोचना का स्वर देते हैं, जबकि 果然 पहले की अपेक्षा की पुष्टि करता है। 幸亏 बच निकलने की भावना बताता है और 反正 यह कहकर बहस बंद करता है कि परिणाम नहीं बदलेगा। केवल अर्थ नहीं, अपेक्षित रवैया देखकर चुनिए।

Similar adverbs, different expectation

Do not use 居然 for something expected; use 果然. 恐怕 adds worry to probability, while 也许 is neutral. 究竟 and 到底 both ask for a conclusion, but 究竟 is more written. 反正 is colloquial and should not replace 毕竟, which gives a reason.

अपेक्षित बात के लिए 居然 नहीं, 果然 प्रयोग कीजिए। 恐怕 संभावना के साथ चिंता जोड़ता है, जबकि 也许 तटस्थ है। 究竟 और 到底 दोनों निष्कर्ष पूछते हैं, पर 究竟 अधिक लिखित है। 反正 बोलचाल का शब्द है और उसे 毕竟 की जगह नहीं रखना चाहिए, जो कारण बताता है।

Group by attitude

Make five small groups: certainty, possibility, surprise, relief and concession. When you meet a new adverb, place it in a group first. Then note whether it prefers statements, questions or negatives.

पाँच छोटे समूह बनाइए: निश्चितता, संभावना, आश्चर्य, राहत और विरोधाभास। नया क्रियाविशेषण मिलने पर पहले उसे किसी समूह में रखिए। फिर देखिए कि वह कथन, प्रश्न या निषेध के साथ अधिक आता है।

Attitude questions

HSK5 listening often asks how the speaker feels. The modal adverb is the clue: 居然 signals surprise, 幸亏 signals relief, and 恐怕 signals a negative guess. Choose the option that matches the attitude, not the literal topic.

HSK5 के श्रवण भाग में प्रायः पूछा जाता है कि वक्ता कैसा महसूस करता है। भाव-दर्शक क्रियाविशेषण संकेत देता है: 居然 आश्चर्य, 幸亏 राहत और 恐怕 नकारात्मक अनुमान बताता है। शब्दशः विषय नहीं, रवैया मिलाने वाला विकल्प चुनिए।
