Usage & Register HSK6
Ellipsis leaves out words that the context already supplies. Mandarin often drops the subject, the object, the predicate or a conjunction, and spoken Chinese drops far more than formal writing. The omitted part must be recoverable from the text or the situation.
Usage & Register — Formal and informal Mandarin, politeness, and common mistakes.
Mandarin often drops the subject (明白了), the object (我吃过了), the predicate (甲:你去吗? 乙:去。) or a conjunction (下雨了,比赛取消了). Spoken Chinese drops more than formal writing, and a shared topic can carry across several clauses.
Each omitted part can be restored from the sentence before it.
明白了। समझ गया। 你吃了吗? तुमने खाया? 吃过了। खा लिया। 他拿起书,就往外走। उसने किताब उठाई और बाहर चला गया। 甲:你去图书馆吗? 乙:去। क: तुम पुस्तकालय जाओगे? ख: जाऊँगा। 下雨了,比赛取消了। बारिश हुई और प्रतियोगिता रद्द हो गई। हर छोड़ा गया भाग पिछले वाक्य से लौटाया जा सकता है।
Chat messages, diaries, headlines and recipes are full of ellipsis. A headline reads 会议推迟,民众关注 instead of 会议被推迟了,民众很关注。 In conversation, repeating every subject sounds stiff and even annoyed.
चैट संदेश, डायरी, समाचार-शीर्षक और व्यंजन-विधियाँ लोप से भरी होती हैं। शीर्षक 会议推迟,民众关注 लिखता है, 会议被推迟了,民众很关注 की जगह। बातचीत में हर कर्ता दोहराना कठोर और झुंझलाहट भरा लगता है।
Learners either repeat every subject like an English sentence or omit so much that the subject becomes unclear. In 小王被批评了,很伤心, the missing subject after the comma is probably 小王, but in a longer text it could be someone else. Formal writing needs more explicit subjects than chat.
शिक्षार्थी या तो अंग्रेज़ी वाक्य की तरह हर कर्ता दोहराते हैं या इतना छोड़ देते हैं कि कर्ता अस्पष्ट हो जाता है। 小王被批评了,很伤心 में अल्पविराम के बाद लुप्त कर्ता प्रायः 小王 है, पर लंबे पाठ में कोई और हो सकता है। औपचारिक लेखन को चैट से अधिक स्पष्ट कर्ता चाहिए।
Ask who does what and what is left out. Restore the missing subject or object in brackets, then decide whether the context really makes it clear. If two readings are possible, write the noun instead of omitting it.
पूछिए कि कौन क्या करता है और क्या छूटा है। लुप्त कर्ता या कर्म को कोष्ठक में लौटाइए, फिर तय कीजिए कि संदर्भ वास्तव में उसे स्पष्ट करता है या नहीं। यदि दो अर्थ संभव हों, तो लोप के बजाय संज्ञा लिखिए।
HSK6 reading and listening rely on ellipsis. When a sentence has no subject, look at the previous sentence for the topic. The correct answer usually continues the same subject unless a new noun is introduced.
HSK6 पठन और श्रवण लोप पर निर्भर करते हैं। जब वाक्य में कर्ता न हो, तो विषय के लिए पिछला वाक्य देखिए। सही उत्तर प्रायः वही कर्ता आगे बढ़ाता है, जब तक नई संज्ञा न आए।
