HSK 5 quantity language goes beyond numbers: 左右 and 上下 give approximations, 以上 and 以下 set limits, 达到 and 超过 mark endpoints, and 增加了 and 增加到 describe different things. Reading charts and news depends on these distinctions.
Words & Measure Words — Everyday vocabulary and the measure word (量词) every noun takes.
Number + 左右 or 上下 means about: 三百人左右, 五十岁上下. Number + 以上 or 以下 means at least or at most: 十八岁以上, 十岁以下. 达到 means reach a level; 超过 means exceed it. 增加了 + amount is the increase; 增加到 + amount is the final figure. 是...的两倍 means twice as much.
संख्या + 左右 या 上下 का अर्थ लगभग: 三百人左右, 五十岁上下। संख्या + 以上 या 以下 का अर्थ कम से कम या अधिकतम: 十八岁以上, 十岁以下। 达到 का अर्थ किसी स्तर तक पहुँचना; 超过 का अर्थ उससे आगे निकलना। 增加了 + मात्रा वृद्धि बताता है; 增加到 + मात्रा अंतिम आँकड़ा। 是...的两倍 का अर्थ दोगुना।
今年参加考试的人大约有五百人左右。 这个价格在一百元上下。 十八岁以上的人可以参加。 十岁以下的孩子不能进入。 销售额达到了五千万元。 今年的产量超过了去年。 收入增加了百分之十。 收入增加到了五千元。
इस साल परीक्षा में लगभग पाँच सौ लोग शामिल हुए। यह कीमत सौ युआन के आसपास है। अठारह वर्ष से अधिक आयु के लोग भाग ले सकते हैं। दस वर्ष से कम उम्र के बच्चे प्रवेश नहीं कर सकते। बिक्री पचास मिलियन युआन तक पहुँच गई। इस साल का उत्पादन पिछले साल से अधिक रहा। आय में दस प्रतिशत वृद्धि हुई। आय बढ़कर पाँच हज़ार युआन हो गई।
Reports use 左右 and 上下 for estimates, 以上 and 以下 for rules, and 达到, 超过, 占 and 翻一番 for trends. When you read a chart, first decide whether the number is a change or a final level, because 增加了 and 增加到 are not interchangeable.
रिपोर्ट में अनुमान के लिए 左右 और 上下, नियमों के लिए 以上 और 以下, और प्रवृत्तियों के लिए 达到, 超过, 占 तथा 翻一番 आते हैं। चार्ट पढ़ते समय पहले तय कीजिए कि संख्या परिवर्तन है या अंतिम स्तर, क्योंकि 增加了 और 增加到 एक-दूसरे के स्थान पर नहीं आते।
Do not use 左右 and 上下 together: 五百人左右上下 is wrong. Do not confuse 增加了 with 增加到: 增加了百分之十 means an increase of ten percent, while 增加到百分之十 means the final figure is ten percent. 以上 and 以下 include the number itself in legal and official texts.
左右 और 上下 को साथ न लगाइए: 五百人左右上下 ग़लत है। 增加了 और 增加到 को न मिलाइए: 增加了百分之十 का अर्थ दस प्रतिशत की वृद्धि है, जबकि 增加到百分之十 का अर्थ अंतिम आँकड़ा दस प्रतिशत है। कानूनी और सरकारी पाठों में 以上 और 以下 में संख्या स्वयं भी शामिल होती है।
Draw a small number line for each pattern: increase, final level, upper limit, lower limit. Say the Chinese phrase while pointing at the line. For approximations, prefer 左右 with time, distance and people, and 上下 with age and price.
हर प्रतिरूप के लिए एक छोटी संख्या-रेखा बनाइए: वृद्धि, अंतिम स्तर, ऊपरी सीमा, निचली सीमा। रेखा की ओर इशारा करते हुए चीनी वाक्यांश बोलिए। अनुमान के लिए समय, दूरी और लोगों के साथ 左右 तथा आयु और कीमत के साथ 上下 अधिक उपयुक्त है।
HSK 5 reading often presents two figures and asks which sentence is correct. Check the verb: 达到, 超过, 增加了 and 增加到 each tells a different story. In listening, 左右 and 上下 may be the only clue that the number is approximate.

Q1. 翻译：我们班有二十多个学生。
अनुवाद कीजिए: 我们班有二十多个学生।
Answer: There are more than twenty students in our class.
💡 “二十多个”表示二十以上但不到三十，多 表示超过。
Q2. 填一个词：十八岁___的人可以参加。
एक शब्द भरिए: अठारह वर्ष ___ लोग भाग ले सकते हैं।
Answer: 以上
💡 以上 表示达到或超过某个界限，包括这个数字。
Q3. “三百人左右”表示人数大约是三百。
“三百人左右” का अर्थ है कि लोगों की संख्या लगभग तीन सौ है।
Answer: 正确
