Usage & Register HSK6

Euphemism softens a refusal, a disagreement or bad news so that the listener keeps face. Mandarin uses hedges such as 恐怕, 可能, 有点 and 不太, and frames such as 是否 and 不妨 instead of a blunt 不行.

Lesson

Lower the force, keep the meaning

A euphemism does not hide the meaning; it lowers the force. The common tools are modal hedges (可能, 也许, 恐怕), degree softeners (有点, 稍微, 不太), tentative frames (是否, 能不能, 不妨) and indirect statements (身体不太好 for being ill, 离开我们 for death). A refusal usually names a difficulty rather than the word no.

Softened sentences in context

Each sentence keeps the bad news but removes the blunt edge.

Refusals, health and bad news

At work a refusal often sounds like At home a family may say 老人最近身体不太好 instead of naming a serious illness. In a formal message, 是否方便 or 不妨考虑 is softer than 行不行 or 你必须.

Too direct or too vague

Learners either stay too direct or soften so much that the message disappears. 有点 is natural with negative qualities (有点贵, 有点晚) but odd with a plain positive (有点好). 恐怕 usually introduces an unwelcome judgement, so 恐怕很好 sounds strange. In formal writing, 是否 is better than 是不是.

Use a three-step ladder

State the fact, add a hedge, then offer an alternative. Keep one or two softeners per sentence; too many make the speaker sound unsure. Match the softener to the situation: 恐怕 for unwelcome news, 可能 for uncertainty, 是否 for a polite question.

In the HSK 6 paper

HSK6 reading often asks what the speaker really means. When a sentence contains 恐怕, 可能, 不太 or 是否, the correct answer is usually the polite version of a refusal or a doubt, not the literal words. In listening, tone and pause matter as much as the hedge.
