Reading & Listening HSK5

A Chinese news report usually follows an inverted pyramid: the headline gives the topic, the lead sentence summarises the most important facts, and later paragraphs add detail, background and comment. Learning the structure lets a reader find the main idea before reading every character.

Reading & Listening — The two receptive skills the HSK tests, with short graded texts.

Lesson

Headline, lead, body

The headline is short and often drops function words. The lead answers what happened, who did it, when and where. The body adds numbers, causes, reactions and background. 据报道 (according to reports), 记者获悉 (the reporter learned) and 有关部门表示 (the relevant department said) mark sources.

शीर्षक छोटा होता है और प्रायः सहायक शब्द छोड़ देता है। लीड बताता है क्या हुआ, किसने किया, कब और कहाँ। मुख्य भाग संख्याएँ, कारण, प्रतिक्रियाएँ और पृष्ठभूमि जोड़ता है। 据报道 (रिपोर्ट के अनुसार), 记者获悉 (संवाददाता को पता चला) और 有关部门表示 (संबंधित विभाग ने कहा) स्रोत दिखाते हैं।

Sentences from news reports

据报道,这座城市的空气质量正在改善。 记者获悉,新医院将于明年投入使用。 有关部门表示,将继续加强监管。 截至目前,已有三千人报名参加。 预计未来一周仍有降雨。 Each sentence gives a source, a time or an official statement before the detail.

Reading a paper in minutes

Read the headline, then the first sentence of each paragraph. In a short report the lead alone often answers the question. When a number or a date appears, note it, because HSK detail questions often turn on 将 (will), 已 (already) and 正在 (in progress).

पहले शीर्षक पढ़िए, फिर हर अनुच्छेद का पहला वाक्य। छोटी रिपोर्ट में अकेला लीड प्रायः उत्तर दे देता है। जब संख्या या तारीख़ आए तो उसे नोट कीजिए, क्योंकि HSK के विवरण-प्रश्न प्रायः 将 (होगा), 已 (हो चुका) और 正在 (जारी) पर टिकते हैं।

Taking a headline as the whole story

Headlines are compressed and can mislead. 我市将新建三所医院 means three hospitals will be built, not that they already exist. Do not ignore the source phrase either: 据报道 and 据了解 signal that the claim is attributed, not stated as the newspaper own fact.

शीर्षक संक्षिप्त होते हैं और भ्रमित कर सकते हैं। 我市将新建三所医院 का अर्थ है तीन अस्पताल बनाए जाएँगे, यह नहीं कि वे पहले से हैं। स्रोत-वाक्यांश भी न छोड़िए: 据报道 और 据了解 बताते हैं कि दावा किसी स्रोत का है, अख़बार का अपना तथ्य नहीं।

Mark time, place and source

On your first pass, underline dates, numbers and source phrases. They are the parts that detail questions test. Then read the lead again and say the main idea in one sentence of your own before looking at the options.

पहली नज़र में तारीख़ें, संख्याएँ और स्रोत-वाक्यांश रेखांकित कीजिए। विवरण-प्रश्न इन्हीं भागों पर आते हैं। फिर लीड दोबारा पढ़िए और विकल्प देखने से पहले मुख्य विचार अपने एक वाक्य में कहिए।

Main idea and detail questions

HSK 5 reading asks for the main idea, the author attitude and specific details. The lead usually holds the main idea, while numbers and official statements hold the details. A wrong option often repeats a word from the passage but changes the time or the source.

HSK 5 पठन मुख्य विचार, लेखक का रवैया और विशिष्ट विवरण पूछता है। मुख्य विचार प्रायः लीड में होता है, जबकि संख्याएँ और आधिकारिक कथन विवरण देते हैं। ग़लत विकल्प अक्सर पाठ का शब्द दोहराता है पर समय या स्रोत बदल देता है।
