Tones & Pinyin HSK5

Tone belongs to a syllable; intonation belongs to a whole sentence. Mandarin uses rising intonation for questions, falling intonation for statements and commands, and a wider range for strong feeling. The same words can become a question, a warning or a joke depending on the tune.

Lesson

Sentence tune over word tones

Each character keeps its own tone, but the whole sentence moves up or down. 你来了。 with a fall is a statement. 你来了? with a rise is a question. 你去吗? uses 吗 and a rise. 别动! uses a sharp fall. The sentence tune does not erase the tones of the individual syllables.

हर अक्षर का अपना सुर रहता है, पर पूरा वाक्य ऊपर या नीचे चलता है। 你来了। गिरते सुर के साथ कथन है। 你来了? चढ़ते सुर के साथ प्रश्न है। 你去吗? में 吗 और चढ़ता सुर है। 别动! में तेज़ गिरता सुर है। वाक्य-लहजा अलग शब्दांशों के सुरों को मिटाता नहीं।

One sentence, several meanings

你来了。 (You came.) 你来了? (Did you come?) 你真厉害。 (You are really capable.) 你真厉害! (You are really something, perhaps sarcastic.) 快走。 (Walk quickly.) 快走! (Hurry up!) The words stay the same; the pitch movement changes the message.

你来了। (तुम आए।) 你来了? (तुम आए?) 你真厉害। (तुम सचमुच काबिल हो।) 你真厉害! (तुम तो कमाल हो, कभी व्यंग्य में।) 快走। (तेज़ चलो।) 快走! (जल्दी करो!) शब्द वही रहते हैं; सुर की चाल संदेश बदल देती है।

Politeness and emotion

A request with a soft rise sounds polite: 你能帮我一下吗? A flat or falling request can sound like an order. Anger raises the pitch and speeds up the sentence, while sadness lowers it and slows it down. In customer service, the tune matters as much as the words.

हल्के चढ़ते सुर वाला अनुरोध विनम्र लगता है: 你能帮我一下吗? सपाट या गिरता अनुरोध आदेश जैसा लग सकता है। क्रोध सुर ऊपर उठाता है और वाक्य तेज़ करता है, जबकि उदासी सुर नीचे लाती है और धीमा करती है। ग्राहक-सेवा में लहजा शब्दों जितना ही महत्वपूर्ण है।

Using a word tone as the sentence tune

Learners sometimes raise the last syllable because it has a second tone and then wonder why a statement sounds like a question. Intonation is a movement across the whole sentence, not a replacement for the tone of one character. Do not make every sentence flat either; flat speech hides the question or the emotion.

शिक्षार्थी कभी अंतिम शब्दांश को दूसरे सुर के कारण ऊपर उठा देते हैं और फिर सोचते हैं कि कथन प्रश्न जैसा क्यों लगता है। वाक्य-लहजा पूरे वाक्य में चलने वाली गति है, किसी एक अक्षर के सुर का विकल्प नहीं। हर वाक्य को सपाट भी न बनाइए; सपाट बोली प्रश्न या भाव छिपा देती है।

Draw arrows over the sentence

Take a short dialogue and draw a rising, falling or level arrow over each line. Then say it with that shape. Comparing 你来了。 and 你来了? with arrows makes the difference visible before it becomes audible.

छोटी बातचीत लीजिए और हर पंक्ति के ऊपर चढ़ता, गिरता या सपाट तीर बनाइए। फिर उसी आकृति के साथ बोलिए। 你来了। और 你来了? की तुलना तीरों के साथ करने से अंतर सुनाई देने से पहले दिखाई देता है।

Attitude questions in listening

HSK listening often asks how the speaker feels: pleased, annoyed, doubtful or surprised. The words may be neutral, so the tune carries the answer. A rise at the end can signal doubt even without a question word, and a sharp fall can signal displeasure.

HSK श्रवण अक्सर पूछता है कि वक्ता कैसा महसूस कर रहा है: प्रसन्न, झुंझलाया, संदेह में या आश्चर्य में। शब्द तटस्थ हो सकते हैं, इसलिए उत्तर लहजा देता है। अंत में चढ़ाव बिना प्रश्न-शब्द के भी संदेह दिखा सकता है, और तेज़ गिराव अप्रसन्नता बता सकता है।
