Words & Measure Words HSK6

Words with the same meaning can belong to different registers. 敬请 suits a public notice, 哥们儿 suits a chat, and using either in the other place sounds wrong even when the grammar is perfect.

Words & Measure Words — Everyday vocabulary and the measure word (量词) every noun takes.

Lesson

Three levels of color

Mandarin words carry a register: formal written, neutral and colloquial. Formal markers include 敬请, 予以, 鉴于 and 兹. Colloquial markers include 挺, 搞定 and 哥们儿. Neutral words such as 请, 很 and 朋友 can move between contexts.

मंदारिन शब्दों में भाषा-स्तर का भाव होता है: औपचारिक लिखित, तटस्थ और बोलचाल। औपचारिक संकेत हैं 敬请, 予以, 鉴于 और 兹। बोलचाल के संकेत हैं 挺, 搞定 और 哥们儿। 请, 很 और 朋友 जैसे तटस्थ शब्द अलग-अलग संदर्भों में चल सकते हैं।

Same meaning, different color

Formal: 敬请光临。 Neutral: 欢迎你来。 Colloquial: 来吧。 Formal: 鉴于天气原因,活动取消。 Colloquial: 因为天气不好,活动取消了。 The facts are the same; only the register changes.

औपचारिक: 敬请光临। तटस्थ: 欢迎你来। बोलचाल: 来吧। औपचारिक: 鉴于天气原因,活动取消। बोलचाल: 因为天气不好,活动取消了। तथ्य वही हैं, केवल भाषा-स्तर बदलता है।

Match the word to the reader

A notice, a contract and a news report expect formal words. A message to a friend expects colloquial ones. Mixing the two inside one text sounds like a joke: 敬请哥们儿光临 is unintentionally funny because the two halves belong to different worlds.

सूचना, अनुबंध और समाचार रिपोर्ट में औपचारिक शब्द चाहिए। मित्र को संदेश में बोलचाल के शब्द चाहिए। एक ही पाठ में दोनों मिलाने पर हास्य लगता है: 敬请哥们儿光临 अनजाने में मज़ेदार है क्योंकि दोनों भाग अलग दुनिया के हैं।

Mixing registers in one line

The common error is not grammar but fit: 兹定于明日开会,请别忘了来 combines a formal opening with a casual reminder. Another error is using 搞定 in a report where 完成 is expected. The exam marks a suitable word used in the wrong register as unsuitable.

सामान्य भूल व्याकरण की नहीं, उपयुक्तता की है: 兹定于明日开会,请别忘了来 औपचारिक आरंभ के साथ बोलचाल की याद दिलाता है। दूसरी भूल रिपोर्ट में 搞定 का प्रयोग है जहाँ 完成 चाहिए। परीक्षा सही शब्द को ग़लत भाषा-स्तर में प्रयुक्त मानकर अनुपयुक्त कहती है।

Ask who will read it

Before choosing a word, ask who will read the text and where it will appear. A noticeboard, a contract or a newspaper sets one register; a chat window sets another. Keep two columns in your notes, formal and colloquial, and place each new word in one of them.

शब्द चुनने से पहले पूछिए कि पाठ कौन पढ़ेगा और कहाँ दिखेगा। सूचना-पट्ट, अनुबंध या समाचार-पत्र एक भाषा-स्तर तय करते हैं; चैट-विंडो दूसरा। अपनी सूची में दो कॉलम रखिए, औपचारिक और बोलचाल, और हर नए शब्द को उनमें से एक में रखिए।

In the HSK 6 paper

HSK 6 reading asks about tone and attitude, and cloze options often differ only in register. If the passage is a notice or a report, choose the formal option; if it is a personal message, choose the colloquial one. The grammar can be correct in both options.

HSK 6 पठन लहजे और रवैये के बारे में पूछता है, और रिक्त स्थान के विकल्प अक्सर केवल भाषा-स्तर में अलग होते हैं। यदि पाठ सूचना या रिपोर्ट है तो औपचारिक विकल्प चुनिए; यदि निजी संदेश है तो बोलचाल का। दोनों विकल्पों में व्याकरण सही हो सकता है।
