Lesson

Attitude shows in words and modality

The attitude of the author 作者态度 may be positive, negative, neutral, mixed or ironic. It is shown by evaluative words such as 值得肯定, 令人担忧, 难能可贵 and 不足为奇. It is also shown by modality: 必然 is stronger than 可能, and 至少 marks a minimum. Identify the author voice before you judge the quoted voices.

Evaluative sentences

“这项政策虽有不足,但总体值得肯定。” shows a mixed but mainly positive attitude. “作者对这一问题不置可否。” means the author avoids a clear judgement. “这样的效率真是惊人。” can be praise or irony, depending on context. “令人遗憾的是,方案仍未落实。” is clearly negative. In each case, the evaluative phrase carries the attitude.

Attitude in reviews and editorials

Reviews, editorials and social media posts often hide a judgement inside neutral-looking language. A writer may say 据说 or 有人认为 to distance himself from a claim. A final paragraph may soften or harden the earlier tone. Reading attitude well helps you decide whether to trust a recommendation.

समीक्षा, संपादकीय और सोशल मीडिया की पोस्ट प्रायः तटस्थ दिखने वाली भाषा में निर्णय छिपाती हैं। लेखक 据说 या 有人认为 कहकर दावे से दूरी बना सकता है। अंतिम अनुच्छेद पहले के स्वर को नरम या कठोर कर सकता है। रुख ठीक पढ़ना आपको बताता है कि किसी सिफ़ारिश पर भरोसा करना चाहिए या नहीं।

Errors in judging attitude

The biggest mistake is to take a quoted opponent view as the author view. Another is to call every text neutral because it contains facts. Learners also miss irony when the words are positive but the context is negative. Finally, a single emotional word is not enough; check the whole paragraph and the conclusion.

Circle evaluative words

Circle evaluative adjectives and adverbs. Mark modality words: 可能, 也许, 必然, 显然, 至少. Ask who says each sentence and whether the author agrees. Read the last paragraph twice, because conclusions often reveal the stance.

मूल्यांकन करने वाले विशेषण और क्रिया-विशेषण घेरिए। संभावना वाले शब्द चिह्नित कीजिए: 可能, 也许, 必然, 显然, 至少. पूछिए कि हर वाक्य कौन कह रहा है और लेखक सहमत है या नहीं। अंतिम अनुच्छेद दो बार पढ़िए, क्योंकि निष्कर्ष प्रायः रुख खोल देता है।

Attitude in the exam

HSK 6 reading regularly asks what attitude the author holds or which statement the author agrees with. The correct option matches the strength of the language. If the author says 可能, do not choose an option that says 一定. If the author concedes a weakness, do not choose complete rejection.

उच्च स्तर की पढ़ने वाली परीक्षा प्रायः पूछती है कि लेखक किस रुख पर है या किस कथन से सहमत है। सही विकल्प भाषा की तीव्रता से मेल खाता है। यदि लेखक 可能 कहे, तो 一定 वाला विकल्प न चुनिए। यदि लेखक कमज़ोरी मान ले, तो पूर्ण नकार वाला विकल्प न चुनिए।
